Cucumber Straightener B

European modern copy of the famed Cucumber Straightener.

Invented by Stephenson of Rocket fame 1845 having become frustrated with crooked cucumbers in his Tapton House gardens.

This one was manufactured in late 1900's possibly in Eastern Europe. Length 16 inches (40 cms). Perfect condition.

English. Early 20C. 'Ridgeways' patent Hedge Clipper. Fine serration to blade edges. 7 Blade model. Ref: The Gardeners Chronicle 21 July 1883 illustrated a 12 blade, 12 and 18 inch model. These were made in 1900's by C T Skelton. Sheffield. Ref: Holtzapffel catalogue 1931. p18. Earlier design with 12 blades sold by Follows & Bate in 2 sizes in 1905. Ref: Wm Wood & Sons catalogue 1909 showing 9 blade model. 12 and 18 inch blades offered. 21 inches L (53.5cms). 14 inches W (35cms).

This example in fine working order. Stamped 'C T Skelton & Co'.Ash handles one with faint old treated woodworm holes but not weakening handle at all. Traces of red paint to steel. All in all a rare addition to a collection.
